Congratulations to the authors of recently published editorials in the Annals of King Edward Medical University about Artificial Intelligence & its use1,2. These are in line with the current developments in AI especially for its use in various learning, education & teaching areas. As AI continues to evolve, its integration into various sectors becomes not just an advantage but a necessity. The potential benefits of AI in the field of medicine are vast, ranging from enhancing diagnostic accuracy and supporting patient’s management to personalizing patient care3. AI continues to evolve & it is imperative to understand its benefits and potential drawbacks. Equally, impact on patient care and significant benefits for refining clinical decision-making, clinical efficiency and enhancing education and training are well accredited4.
The published editorials bring considerable importance for AI’s potential role in medical education. Artificial intelligence offers a variety of advantages for enhancing efficiency and decision-making to improving current practices. It continues to evolve & it is the right time to understand its benefits and potential drawbacks as well. It warrants a closer look for introducing this subject in medical curriculum as it opens new avenues for learning and conceptualization in various fields of medicine. AI’s inclusion in current medical education will be beneficial to the medical students for learning new skills & using the technological advances in their future practices. Tools like simulating clinical scenarios, reality-based feedback & extending the options for person specific learning opportunities may be helpful in updating the student’s knowledge for practical applications in a more comprehensive way. Whereas its use in computing technologies, learning skills in language processing & speech recognition are gaining a substantial importance, a caution is needed about the risks that may cause harm in know-how & practices. The concerns about its extensive application & influences on job losses, labour market impacts and cyber-attacks raise further dangers. At the same time, it also presents corresponding challenges like ethical concerns. There has been a call to regulate the current policies and practices to monitor the risks -benefits evaluation as well. Balancing the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence is crucial for maximizing its benefits while lessening its risks. A recent report on the safety of AI entitled “Taking advantage of AI opportunities - safety calls for global collaboration” advocates for establishing of an internationally shared scientific understanding of benefits & risks from advanced AI and methods for managing them5.
AI's role in healthcare is developing as a dynamic and evolving landscape6. It opens new avenues and appears as one of the most exciting areas of skills development of the 21st century. By embracing such innovations and remaining vigilant about the associated risks, the medical community can channelise full potential of AI to improve patient care, outcomes and advances for the future of medicine. We hope that further development will be directed towards acceptance & recognition of such advances in medical curriculum that would be essential for ensuring its positive understanding and tackling potential risks. It is crucial to develop new legal frameworks and regulations to address the issues arising from AI technologies. Likewise, legal & medical systems must evolve to keep pace with technological advancements and protect the rights of everyone.
